A simple serendipity..

A couple of weeks ago we built this bag:

(Renata in Cognac Jacket)

A part of a 3/4 length vintage coat was used to build it, and we admired to two-toned colourway of it, the sturdy, crease resistant leather and the snap buttons, some of which had to make it onto the bag.

Now, through our practice, which of course, has not been very long, especially, interpreting vintage coats and re-constructing them into bags, the chances of finding ANOTHER coat, just like we used before, are very slim.

Knowing, that many of these garments are a couple of decades old, made and sold in completely different times and quantities, those chances are merely non-existent. Sometimes they are imported from other parts of the world, too. That's why they are in such a high demand with contemporary accessories designers - for their uniqueness and rarity.

That's why we were so surprised to find another coat, just like the one we nearly used up a few short weeks ago...

In another part of town, and the tone of the jacket was slightly different, the two-toned bottom part was more monochrome, but it was the same model, size and series! Same beautiful slant pockets, buttons and collar.

So, this means that there are doubles - not many, but there are. This sure gives a little hope to a Custom Service client, who missed out on snagging a beautiful interpretation of a vintage garment.

Jump to the new collection: Spring Summer 2013 Cruise...

After a couple of very hectic months, we're in the middle of preparations for the One Of  A Kind Show in Toronto - for the second year.
What we're bringing alongside the regular stock, is a completely new range of designs, our SS 13 Cruise collection...

Contrast of opposing textures, visual changes in an abject in different times during the day, surfaces of different finishes and smooth lines were in the focus for this collection, all wrapped up in a relaxed and joyous mood of vacations. This is definitely our most celebratory collection, with lots of basic colours, and materials, other than leather, introduced to the shells of bags...

Metallics - new and unexplored...

Platinum coloured leather
On one of my supply runs, I reluctantly picked up a small, but sturdy side of metallic leather. A bunch of them just got liquidated out of the States, so I decided to get one and see if I can ever work with it.

Now, I am no big fan of metallic purses. They had a few strong years of presence back around 2004, and it appears to be, that Fall of 2011 may become their another cyclical return. On occasion, I would find a metallic bag I would like in some ways, like the silhouette, or the feel of leather, but always found it hard to wrap  - even my tolerant mind -  around the bedazzled atrocities of the decor, tacky logo medallions or out-dated hardware. So, when the leather landed on my table, I knew I will need some time to distance my imagination from the countless images of other people's unfortunate metallic creations.
For the next few days I started doubting if it is even possible to make a tasteful metallic bag...Or, if I can even see any of my existing designs in a Metallic...  I almost decided to give the idea up, thinking that "bling" just was not me.

I found images of these several bags, that appeared to be free of all the traditional mishaps of the Metallic trends:

Stella McCartney

Lucca-Elliott

Salvatore Ferragamo

Foley And Corinna

Ironically, all these bags, even though Metallic,- are still of Earth colours - modified shades of brown and beige. My leather was beaming Platinum, making me as nervous, as ever...

I received some great advice from fellow bag makers and fans - to use my Metallic for accents, small purses, etc. Some were way bolder, encouraging me to "just do it" - cut it that is...

I decided to start with the latter, and take steps to tackle my points of anxiety one my one:

1.To soften the look of the Platinum coloured 4.5 oz'er, I needed to apply it to one of my softest and simplest designs.  In Metallic.
Metallic Limited Finish Sarah

2. In order to not take the look overboard, I shortened the strap, creating an evening version of the Sarah bag.
1/2 strap for Evening version

3. Since ties would not work very well of a stiffer leather, I used an understated buckle for strap adjustments.

Buckled strap - all one tone!

Done - The prototype will make it's debut at my booth at Make It Vancouver next weekend....

I was surprised how happy I was with the final result. The next day I wore it out for my very necessary "sampling" walk, and the feedback I got, tells me, that we are on the right track with this one... Needless to say, I went back to my supplier and retrieved another Platinum side for future production.

Full metal

Till further notice, the Limited Finish Metallic Sarah bags will only be available at the Webshop.

We're featured as the Designer Of The Day at Handbagdesigner101.com

Handbag Designer 101 is a web-site, dedicated to showcasing Independent handbag designers and makers. They also host Independent Handbag Designer Awards, an event that gets some serious coverage by the Fashion media.

Today, they kindly chose Jola V. Designs to be their designer of the day. See the feature here!

The community of Independent Handbag Designers is new and, till now, seemingly did not have a dedicated web-source to network or showcase their work.

Unlike those, involved in making Beauty products, we lack dedicated review web-pages, photo sources or indie handbag discussion forums. I am very thrilled to have found Handbag Designer 101, and about their wonderful feature!

Vacation!

Tree, source: Loadtr.com
Starting tomorrow I finally can take some time off - from Day job that is. The offices will be shut down for the week between Christmas and New Years, meaning more freedom for me - to sleep in, to not run around, to focus on what I love doing the most, which is working from home, on my bags.

Much of that time will be dedicated to sourcing new materials for the Spring add-ons to my Coming Of Age collection. Also, a few new ideas for Spring and Beach, I cannot wait to start bringing to life. And when I am not sourcing, planning, patterning, applying for the Spring shows, designing new business cards, sewing  or updating my on-line stock, I will be... resting.

Dundarave Olive Co - amongst my gifts!

Luckily, most of my own Christmas shopping is done - unfortunately, not the overseas mailing, which will have to wait till next week.... This year, I can proudly announce, that all my gifts are made in here, in BC!

I love the Winter Holiday season for its serenity. After sunset, there are not many things I would rather do, than light a lovely candle, turn the Christmas tree lights on,  and cozy up on the couch with a book and a glass of wine. Cliche, I know, but, this year I am looking forward to that more than ever...

Katie, The Bag Royal Blue
What a year has it been! Jola V. Designs has grown way beyond my wildest expectations, I am immensely thankful to all those who have been so supportive and generous this year. Next Spring we will mark our 2nd anniversary, and we would not have been able to get there without you!

The year of 2011 already looks promising, with possibly going part time at my day-job, so more time to work on the bags, and actually have the ability to get more in touch -  and keep up -  with my customers.

I am planning a few great Spring shows in the Vancouver area and some traveling and tanning for the Summer!

But, for now - a very well deserved Holiday season vacation!

Leather for the Fall part 2 - Unfinished and Deertanned cowhide

Not all my bags come in the most traditional leather surface finishes. As a true fan of this craft, I have always been trying to seek out the rarer, different types or treatments of leather, and try to work with all of it, within limits, set by my believes.

Because Leather is not a vegan by nature, and therefore, a cruelty free material, I decided to not contribute to the increase of its production, but use up the leftovers instead for my craft. Even though it would perhaps be interesting, I do not work with Wild animal, Exotic, Hair-on-hide, Fur, or NEW leather. I also do not shop charity stores for leather clothing to make my bags from, as only a small portion of the 'recycled' item can be used (usually shell only, making for 30% of entire materials), whilst the rest of it is thrown away (up to 70%).

To continue on my finds for the Pre-Fall 2010 COMING OF AGE Collection, I must admit, my personal favourite is a rare and beautiful Unfinished (otherwise labeled Deertanned) cowhide. It feels velvety to the touch, has deep, matte look, and to some it is reminiscent of deer leather. The matte finish shows its imperfections slightly more than a glossy one, but that is exactly what makes this leather both velvety, robust and, yet, fluid at the same time, with lots of character.

Black Unfinished cowhide

Gold Tan Unfinished cowhide
Saddle Tan Unfinished cowhide

Other types of the touchable Unfinished leather I've found, were both, Upholstery and Garment weights will be great for bags in limited, fun colours... Just as gentle to the touch, and just as fluid to work with....

Coffee Brown
